Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars Program

The First-Generation Alumni Association brings together the community of first-generation University of Florida alumni, including Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars (MFOS).

The MFOS program is near and dear to the founding executive board. As alumni of the program, MFOS supports low-income students who are the first in their families to attend college. The transformational program celebrated its first ten years in the fall of 2016. During that decade, almost 4,000 students received scholarships.

The term first-generation (or first-gen) refers to students who are the first in their families to attend college. The University of Florida classification determines that a student’s parents have not earned a bachelor’s degree. Additionally, students who have siblings in college but whose parents did not earn a bachelor’s degree are considered first-generation.
